What is the difference between Lip Blush and Lip Neutralization?
Both techniques employ the same technique of gently implanting pigment (colour) into the top layer of the skin by means of tiny, sterile, disposable needles.
Lip Blush gives your lips a boost of colour and definition, correcting pigment issues such as paleness and enhancing the natural shape of your lips.
Lip Neutralization is for any person with darker and cooler tones in their lip skin. When done correctly, lips will be more even toned and lighter.

How long will it last?
Cosmetic tattoo procedures will not wash off, however, they will gradually fade over time and need to be touched-up. Although the tattoo may fade, they may not fully disappear. The average retention and duration of pigments in the skin range from 1-3 years. The rate of retention depends on multiple factors such as:
- Oily skin
- Use retinols or Vitamin C
- Iron deficiency
- Excessive sun exposure
- Use of exfoliants
- Exposure to salt water
Remember, every skin is different. Results are not guaranteed as everybody is unique and heals differently. In order to maintain the colour and shape of your brows, it is recommended to schedule a touch-up every 12-24 months.
Does it hurt?
In an effort to ensure you remain as comfortable as possible, a medical grade topical anesthetic cream and gel are applied throughout the procedure. Keep in mind that pain thresholds vary from person to person, and small amounts of discomfort can be expected.

- A one-on-one consultation.
- Custom designs and pigment blends to enhance the natural beauty of your face.
- An aftercare kit complete with instructions to facilitate the best possible healed results.
- A complimentary perfecting session within 6-8 weeks.
How do I prepare for my appointment?
- Avoid consumption of caffeine and alcohol for 24 hrs prior to prevent excessive bleeding & sensitivity
- Do not take any blood thinners 72 hrs prior unless medically necessary. These may include, but are not limited to, Advil/Ibuprofen/Aspirin, Niacin, Vitamin E, or Fish Oils
- Discontinue any application of chemical exfoliants such as Glycolic Acid, Retin-A, AHAs, etc. for at least 1 week prior
- Refrain from exposing your skin to the sun/tanning beds for at least 3 weeks prior
- Any cosmetic procedures must be done at least 4 weeks prior to your appointment. These may include, but are not limited to, botox/fillers, chemical peels, and laser skin resurfacing.
- Use a gentle sugar & honey scrub or any cleansing scrub to exfoliate lips twice a day, everyday for 3 days prior. After exfoliation, keep lips well moisturized with a lip ointment.
- Lip Blush can trigger cold sores if you are a carrier of the virus and as a result, can affect the healing process. As a precaution, it is recommended that you visit your family doctor and obtain an antiviral medication prescription (e.g. Valtrex) to take 5 days prior procedure, the day of, and 5 days after. If your appointment is during a cold sore outbreak, the procedure cannot be performed.
- Bring in your favourite lipstick or a photo on the day of your appointment.
IMPORTANT THINGS TO CONSIDER:
- Must be off Accutane for at least one year
- Must consult with your doctor prior to stopping any medications
- You may be more sensitive during your menstrual cycle
What will my appointment be like?
All cosmetic tattoo procedures are a two-step process which consists of an initial treatment followed by a mandatory perfecting treatment 6-8 weeks later.
The initial treatment will be longer than the perfecting treatment and starts with a consultation, at which point shape and colour are discussed. A design will be created that is measured according to your specific facial features and upon approval, the procedure begins.
Perfecting treatments are mandatory so that we can make minor alterations to the shape and colour of your tattoo or fill in areas that did not retain pigment as well as others during the healing process. Perfecting treatments also add to the longevity of your tattoo and MUST be scheduled within 6-8 weeks of your initial procedure. After the 8 week time frame, touch-ups will be provided and charged according to the amount of time lapsed from your initial appointment.
What should I expect after the procedure?
Immediately after your procedure, you can expect that your permanent makeup will appear to be darker and more pronounced than anticipated. Redness, swelling, and tenderness if any is normal and will subside. Gradually, your tattoo will lighten 30-50% during the healing process. Flakiness and some loss of pigment may occur and can be corrected at the perfecting appointment.
How long does it take to heal?
The healing process goes through multiple stages:
- DAY 1: Lips will be swollen & the colour will be very vibrant.
- DAY 2: Swelling will go down & the colour will get darker. Lips will begin to feel tight & dry.
- DAY 3: Lips will begin to peel/scab. DO NOT PICK. Extreme dryness is normal.
- DAY 4-6: Peeling/scabbing continues.
- DAY 7: The peeling/scabbing has subsided, however the colour will appear to have disappeared.
- DAY 28-42: The final colour is back and has settled in, and has lightened 30-50%.
IMPORTANT:
It’s completely normal for your lips to look slightly darker during the first few days post-procedure. DO NOT WORRY, they will slowly lighten. This is the natural process. It’s also expected that they may scab/flake, so don’t sweat that either. It’s all temporary and will be gone within a few days.
Do I need my perfecting session?
Perfecting sessions are complimentary if you are booking a new tattoo and they are recommended for everybody. At this session, we can make minor alterations to the shape and colour of your tattoo, or fill in areas that didn’t retain the pigment as well as others during healing. The perfecting session will also add longevity to the life of your tattoo. A perfecting session MUST be booked within 6-8 weeks of your initial appointment. After 8 weeks, touch-ups can be provided at an additional charge and is priced according to the amount of time lapse from the initial appointment. You are responsible for booking your perfecting session.
Please note, typically cosmetic tattoo procedures are a two-step process. However, since every skin is unique and heals differently, certain cases may require more than two sessions in order to attain the desired results. Results are not guaranteed and you are responsible for any additional touch-up sessions.
Can I still get my lips tattooed if I have filler?
Yes! Lip filler does not interfere with the process of tattooing lips or the final results. In fact, lip filler stretches the skin, causing the edges of the lips to become blurred. A lip tattoo can help to redefine your lips, resulting in a fuller appearance. Please ensure that your lip filler and lip tattoo appointment are scheduled at least 4 weeks apart from each other.
Can you tattoo outside of the lip line?
As we age, the colour on our lips tends to recede. With Lip Blush, we are able to extend the border of your lips so long as we remain on lip skin. The skin on the lips is not the same as the skin on the face and things can look unnatural or become unpredictable when we tattoo too far outside the natural lip line.
Why do lip tattoos trigger cold sores?
The Herpes Simplex Virus is very common and many people are not aware that they are a carrier because the signs are not always visible until it is triggered. As a precaution, it is highly recommended that you obtain an antiviral medication to be taken 5 days before, the day of, and 5 days after your procedure. Please note, a cold sore outbreak can affect the healed results of the tattoo.
How do I know if I need a lip blush or lip neutralization service?
You will need a Lip Neutralization service if your lips are two-toned, cool, brown, or dark in appearance. If you are still not sure, please send a clear picture of your lips in natural lighting & without makeup on to: info@beauteboulevard.com
Should I be concerned of skin/wound infections?
Every tool that is used during the procedure is pre-sterilized, disposable, and disposed of after use. Proper infection control procedures are strictly adhered to in order to avoid cross-contamination. Skin/wound infections are possible during the healing process if you do not strictly adhere to the recommended aftercare instructions.
Can you cover up an existing cosmetic tattoo?
If you have existing cosmetic tattoos done by another artist, please send us a clear photo in natural lighting PRIOR TO BOOKING. Only certain existing work will be accepted once photos have been approved. The existing tattoo must be VERY faded in order to be worked over or corrected. Extra fees will apply if a colour correction is necessary. Photos can be sent to: info@beauteboulevard.com
Please do not arrive to your appointment with an existing tattoo without consulting first. If your existing work cannot be corrected, your appointment may be cancelled and your deposit will be forfeited.
Procedure Contraindications
You may NOT have a cosmetic tattoo procedure if:
- You are under the age of 18
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding
- You have been on Accutane (isotretinoin) within the last 12 months
- You are currently undergoing chemotherapy
- You have any skin conditions near the treatment area (e.g. psoriasis, eczema, rashes, acne, sunburn, etc.)
- You have heart problems, healing disorders, or uncontrolled high blood pressure
- You have bleeding disorders (hemophilia) or trouble with blood clotting
- You are currently taking any medications that may affect how your skin responds to blood clotting and healing
- You have uncontrolled diabetes
- You are epileptic
- You are prone to keloid/hypertrophic scarring
- You develop infections easily
- You have allergies/sensitivities to makeup, colour, alcohol, numbing agents/topical anesthetic
- You have previous permanent makeup which has not adequately faded
- You have had any cosmetic procedures within the last 4 weeks. These may include, but are not limited to, botox/fillers, chemical peels, and laser skin resurfacing
